Tips for Burglary Prevention

Following are some steps you can take to make sure that your home and property are secure. It is important that both the outside of your house and the inside are protected. When you are away from home there are extra things to do. Also, look for special tips for apartment dwellers.

Outside Perimeter
Make sure all doors are fitted with deadbolt locks
Use key locks on inside doors within reach of windows
Remember to lock your porch and garage, not just your front door
Never leave notes on your door to tell people when you’re not there
Secure sliding doors and windows with a track pin or bar
Keep tools, ladders, etc. in places that aren’t accessible to potential burglars
Store lawn mowers, gas barbeques and other outside appliances away from view
Light the outside of your home to discourage prowling or loitering

Inside Security
Refuse to provide information regarding your property to telephone surveys
Avoid leaving valuables, coin collections or large amounts of cash at home
Leave lights on and a radio or TV playing when you are out for short periods
Mark your valuables and record serial numbers for identification

Vacation Security
Notify a neighbor of your travel plans and give them a key so they can check on your house periodically
Leave window shades in normal positions
Stop delivery of the newspaper and have a neighbor pick up your mail
Make arrangements for your yard to be kept up
Use timers on interior and exterior lights
Double-check all doors and windows before you leave to be sure they are properly secured

Apartment Security
Refer unknown persons seeking entrance to the manager
Report suspicious activities to the manager or police
Advise your apartment manager of any travel plans and request apartment checks
